Smart Home buy-in: over three quarters believe controlling their home with a smartphone would make their life easier

The vision of consumers being able to easily interconnect, customize and control a huge range of devices at home has always been compelling. Research carried out by CSR now seems to lend credence to this vision.

Investigating consumer attitudes towards the smart home across the USA, China, Japan, UK and Germany, our research has found that 76% of global consumers want to control their home using smart devices, but one in four believe that setting up connected devices in the home is too difficult.

The research highlights a strong desire among consumers for whole home control via a smartphone or tablet, in particular controlling music, lighting, and other devices such as thermostats, air conditioning units and security sensors.

As well as control, the survey revealed that consumers are looking for home automation with ‘lights that automatically turn on and off as you walk in and out of a room’ topping the list of the top five most desired smart home scenarios.

What this research highlights is that consumers now more than ever have sophisticated opinions about how their ideal smart home should function. The desire for a totally connected home goes beyond just remotely controlling light switches and extends to an unlimited number of fully automated smart scenarios including music, TV, and heating systems.

The research also investigated the challenges facing consumers when creating the smart home they desire. One in three (36%) are concerned that buying connected devices for the home would be expensive, while one in four believe that devices would be too difficult to set up. 26% are also worried about the security of using smart home solutions and believe that device and brand interoperability is a challenge when connecting devices at home.

In order to address the top consumer concerns and unlock the true potential of the Internet of Everything (IoE), the industry needs to deliver effective, scalable and secure technology platforms. Consumers should not be expected to settle for anything less than cost-effective and interoperable smart home systems. This report should act as a call to action for the industry to work together to prevent the smart home market from becoming fragmented, ensuring consumers experience the seamless smart home experience they desire.

Methodology

The State of Play report incorporates the views of 2,000 interviewees conducted among adults aged 18-65 who own a smartphone, have Wi-Fi® at home, and typically put on and listen to music at home once a week or more often. Fieldwork was conducted online in October and November 2014 across the USA, China, Japan, UK, and Germany. The State of Play audio research was conducted and analysed by Loudhouse Research.
